Solution Kit

Feedback and research tells us that the Solution Kit as a concept is powerful for supporting the development of social competencies in young children.  It has also proven to be effective for educators as they strive to pin point the trigger areas or hot spots for challenging behaviours.
The CSEFEL and TACSEI institutes have provided for us the incredibly detailed links to enable printing of the visuals for the kit in a variety of sizes, providing a version suitable for key rings, lanyards, or the large kit itself.  The way you scaffold the implementation of the kit will be the reason this kit has an impact.

Here are some top tips from current users and mentors on implementing and using the Solution Kit:
  • Have enough printed / laminated solution kit visuals for several Solution Kits.
  • Have the children decorate as fancy as you like, several boxes that will become the Kit.
  • Consider having one lot of the cards on Velcro with easy access at various areas of play.
  • Familiarise yourself with the various solutions that reflect your expectations as a service eg. respect, safety, team player.
  • The Solution Kit may initially be the reason some behaviours occur - simply to pull out the kit!  Be open to using it multiple times during any one element of your routine, until the novelty wears off.  At this stage, it will become really effective for the focus children and all children will have an understanding of how it works.
  • Identify hot spots by noting the areas / times of day / elements of the routine that seem to require the Solution Kit the most.
  • Ensure all the adults that come into the room are aware of how to use the Solution Kit.
  • Refer to elements of the Kit when they are working - eg.  when a child is sharing, pull out the share solution and express descriptive praise that an appropriate solution was chosen to be used.
Your Solution Kit can include other elements that resonate with your practice or that you are working on specifically as preventative skills to support children's social and emotional development.

The Tool Kit, which includes Tucker Turtle, provides a number of different focus supports to reduce challenging behaviour and consider developing appropriate replacement skills.
